Accumulative / Erosion Structures
Structures that achieve their effect through mass — either piling up evidence, examples, and arguments to build overwhelming weight, or systematically dismantling a position piece by piece.
6 structures across 2 subcategories
Additive (Building Up)
Structures that pile on evidence, examples, or arguments until the cumulative weight becomes overwhelming.
Evidence₁ + Evidence₂ + Evidence₃ + ... = Overwhelming Weight
A structure that presents one piece of evidence after another, each individually suggestive but collectively overwhelming — the argument is carried by sheer accumulation rather than by any single decisive proof.
Point₁ → Point₂ (amplifies ₁) → Point₃ (amplifies ₁+₂) → ...
A structure where each successive point not only adds to the argument but amplifies the force of all previous points — creating accelerating momentum where the argument gains mass as it rolls forward.
Point → Restate louder → Elaborate → Vivid detail → Emotional peak
A classical structure that takes a single point and progressively magnifies it through restatement, elaboration, vivid detail, and emotional intensification — not adding new arguments but making one argument inescapably large.
Subtractive (Tearing Down)
Structures that systematically dismantle, reduce, or erode a position piece by piece.
Opponent's Premise → Logical Extension → Further Extension → Absurd Conclusion
A structure that takes an opponent's premise and follows it to its logical extreme, demonstrating that it leads to absurd or untenable conclusions — destroying the position by showing where it inevitably goes.
Target Position → Flaw₁ → Flaw₂ → Flaw₃ → ... → Collapse
A structure that takes a position, argument, or text and dismantles it component by component — addressing each claim, assumption, or logical step in sequence and showing each to be flawed.
Accept Position → Qualify → Qualify further → Exception → Exception → Position dissolves
A structure that appears to accept a position but gradually introduces qualifications, exceptions, complications, and counter-evidence that progressively erode it until nothing remains — destruction through apparent reasonableness.
