Evidence Stacking
Movement Pattern
Evidence₁ + Evidence₂ + Evidence₃ + ... = Overwhelming Weight
Definition
A structure that presents one piece of evidence after another, each individually suggestive but collectively overwhelming — the argument is carried by sheer accumulation rather than by any single decisive proof.
Examples
Example 1
The emails show he knew. The calendar entries show he was in the room. The financial disclosures show he profited. The phone records show he called the regulator the night before the decision. The text messages — obtained under subpoena — show he told his wife to sell the stock. The offshore account, traced through three shell companies, shows where the money went. No single document is a smoking gun. Together, they are an autobiography of corruption.
Investigative journalism — the cumulative weight does what no single proof can
Example 2
Temperature records show the ten warmest years in recorded history have all occurred since 2010. Ice cores show CO₂ levels are higher than at any point in 800,000 years. Sea levels have risen eight inches since 1900, accelerating in the last two decades. The Greenland ice sheet is losing 280 billion tons of ice per year. Glacier National Park had 150 glaciers in 1850; it has 25 today. Ocean acidity has increased 30% since the Industrial Revolution. Species are migrating poleward at an average rate of eleven miles per decade. Each data point is a sentence. Together they are a verdict.
Science communication — the pile of evidence overwhelms cherry-picking
Example 3
January 15: he commented on her appearance in front of three colleagues. March 8: he blocked her promotion, citing "insufficient experience" — she had twelve years; the man who got the position had four. June 3: he reassigned her to a windowless office on a different floor. August 20: he excluded her from the client presentation she had prepared. October 9: he terminated her position, citing "restructuring" — no other position was eliminated. Each incident, alone, could be explained away. In sequence, they tell a story that explanation cannot reach.
Legal filing — the timeline of evidence reveals a pattern no single incident proves
AI Detection Note
AI can stack evidence but tends to make each piece too similar in format and weight. Human evidence stacking has more variation — some pieces are strong, some circumstantial, some emotional.
