Erosion Structure
Movement Pattern
Accept Position→Qualify→Qualify further→Exception→Exception→Position dissolves
Definition
A structure that appears to accept a position but gradually introduces qualifications, exceptions, complications, and counter-evidence that progressively erode it until nothing remains — destruction through apparent reasonableness.
Examples
Example 1
Of course meritocracy is a worthy ideal. People should be rewarded for talent and effort. Of course. But talent is unevenly distributed at birth, and effort is unevenly possible — the child with a private tutor and the child with a second job are not competing on the same terms. And "reward" assumes a fair system of measurement, but the SAT was designed to predict college success for white students in the 1920s. And "merit" itself is defined by those who already succeeded, which means it tends to describe the qualities they happen to possess. By the time you've accounted for inherited wealth, unequal schools, biased metrics, and the self-serving definition of merit itself, the word "meritocracy" has been hollowed out. It still stands. But if you tap it, it's empty.
Social criticism — the position dissolves through apparently reasonable qualifications
Example 2
"Of course the algorithm is neutral." Though it was trained on historical data. Which reflects past discrimination. And the team that built it was 89% male and 94% white. And the metrics it optimizes reward engagement over accuracy. And "engagement" turns out to mean "emotional reaction," which means the algorithm promotes outrage over truth. And it was tested on a dataset that excluded the populations most affected by its decisions. By the end of this paragraph, "neutral" means nothing. The algorithm is a mirror of the people who built it, reflecting their blind spots with mathematical precision.
Tech criticism — each qualification erodes the initial claim until it collapses
Example 3
"The CEO has full confidence in the CFO." Though the board has requested an independent audit. And the CFO has retained personal counsel. And two board members sold their shares last Tuesday. And the company's outside law firm — the one that has represented them for twelve years — quietly withdrew from the engagement last week. And the "full confidence" statement was issued at 4:58 p.m. on a Friday before a holiday weekend. The confidence evaporates without ever being directly challenged.
Business journalism — erosion through implication is more devastating than accusation

Rare in AI text. LLMs tend toward explicit argumentation rather than the subtle, cumulative undermining that erosion requires.
