Definition

A classical structure that takes a single point and progressively magnifies it through restatement, elaboration, vivid detail, and emotional intensification — not adding new arguments but making one argument inescapably large.

Examples

Example 1

She was denied a loan. She was denied a loan despite a credit score of 780 and a debt-to-income ratio of 12%. She was denied a loan while sitting in the same office where a white applicant with a lower credit score and higher debt was approved that same morning. She watched it happen. She said nothing. She went home. This happens 2.7 times more often to Black applicants than to white applicants with identical financial profiles, according to Federal Reserve data. It has happened this way, with this ratio, in this country, for sixty years.

Civil rights argument — each restatement makes the injustice larger and more systemic

Example 2

"She was denied a loan." Then: "She was denied a loan despite perfect credit." Then: "She watched a less-qualified white applicant get approved the same day." Then: "This happens 2.7 times more often to Black applicants nationwide." Then: "It has happened this way for sixty years."

Civil rights argument — amplificatio in compressed form, each line widening the lens

Example 3

He taught her to ride a bicycle. That's the whole memory — a man holding the back of a bicycle seat, running alongside, letting go. Except it's not just a man. It's a man who worked two jobs so she could have the bicycle. It's hands that were calloused from the warehouse but gentle on the seat. It's a Sunday afternoon he could have spent sleeping but chose to spend running in circles on a cracked driveway. It's the letting go — which is what all parenting is, isn't it? The holding on until the moment you let go, and then watching, out of breath, as they ride away from you, wobbling, not looking back. The garage is empty now. The bicycle is rusted. He is gone. But the letting go — that is still happening. It never stopped.

Eulogy — amplificatio transforms a small memory into the entire relationship

AI Detection Note

AI struggles with amplificatio because it tends to move to new points rather than deepening a single one — it mistakes breadth for depth.
