Transitioning
Pattern
Backward reference + forward signal — bridge between discourse segments
Definition
Using language to bridge between topics, sections, or ideas — signaling shifts in focus, returning to a main thread, or connecting disparate points.
Examples
Example 1
'With that in mind, let's turn to the second factor.' — explicitly signals a shift to a new topic while maintaining connection to the previous discussion.
AI Detection Note
AI transitions are overwhelmingly explicit and formulaic ('moving on to', 'turning now to', 'with that said'). Human writing uses more varied and subtle transitions — a keyword echo, a question, a new anecdote — rather than always announcing the shift.
