Intensifying
Pattern
Emphatic modifier + strong lexis — force amplification
Definition
Using language to amplify the force, importance, or emotional weight of a claim. Includes superlatives, emphatic adverbs, repetition, and strong lexical choices.
Examples
Example 1
'This is absolutely critical to our survival.' — 'absolutely' and 'critical' and 'survival' all intensify what could have been 'this matters'.
AI Detection Note
AI often over-intensifies with adverbs ('incredibly', 'remarkably', 'truly', 'fundamentally') that have been bleached of force through overuse. Human intensification tends to be more selective and earned — saving strong language for moments that warrant it.
