Signaling Concession
Pattern
While/although + acknowledged counterpoint + but/however + main claim — yield then counter
Definition
Using language to acknowledge a counterpoint, limitation, or opposing view before presenting one's own position. Concession can build credibility or set up a stronger rebuttal.
Examples
Example 1
While the initial costs are significant, the long-term savings justify the investment.
Classic concession-rebuttal: "while X" acknowledges the counterpoint, "the long-term savings" pivots to the main claim
Example 2
Admittedly, the sample size was small. Nevertheless, the results were consistent across all trials.
"Admittedly" + "nevertheless" — explicit concession followed by explicit counter
Example 3
I grant that the old system worked. But it worked in a world that no longer exists.
"I grant that" — unusually direct concession. The rebuttal reframes rather than contradicts.
AI Detection Note
The concession-rebuttal pattern is one of the most distinctive AI signatures. AI produces it with mechanical regularity: 'While X, Y.' 'Although X, it's important to note Y.' Human concession is less formulaic and sometimes genuinely unresolved.
