Referential Cohesion
Pattern
NP₁... pronoun/demonstrative→same referent — entity-tracking links
Definition
Using pronouns, demonstratives, or repeated noun phrases to maintain reference to the same entity across sentences. Creates continuity by tracking participants through the discourse.
Examples
Example 1
'Maria entered the room. She noticed the open window immediately.' — 'she' refers back to 'Maria', maintaining cohesion across sentences.
AI Detection Note
AI often over-repeats full noun phrases instead of using pronouns, creating a stilted, redundant feel ('the framework... the framework... the framework' instead of 'it'). Conversely, AI sometimes uses pronouns with ambiguous referents.
