Lexical Cohesion
Pattern
Word₁ ... related word₂ — semantic field continuity
Definition
Using related words — synonyms, near-synonyms, superordinates, collocates, or words from the same semantic field — to create continuity across sentences without exact repetition.
Examples
Example 1
'The dog barked at the stranger. The animal growled as the man approached.' — 'animal' for 'dog' and 'man' for 'stranger' create lexical cohesion through synonymy.
AI Detection Note
AI tends toward excessive synonym variation — never using the same word twice when a synonym exists. This creates 'thesaurus syndrome' where the constant variation actually disrupts cohesion rather than enhancing it.
