Definition
A structure where the main point or resolution is suspended across a long stretch of text — subordinate clauses, qualifications, evidence, and context all pile up before the main clause finally arrives, creating a sense of anticipation and release.
Examples
Example 1
In Marbury v. Madison, the court established judicial review. In Dred Scott, it failed to use that power justly. In Brown v. Board, it corrected course. In Roe, it extended privacy rights beyond what the text could comfortably support. In Citizens United, it elevated corporate speech above electoral integrity. In Dobbs, it reversed Roe and reopened the question of what rights the constitution protects and what rights it merely tolerates. Given all of this — given the precedents honored and abandoned, given the principles declared and contradicted, given two hundred years of the court telling the nation what the law means while the nation argues about what justice requires — the ruling of this court is as follows: the statute is unconstitutional.

Smith (1973) found no significant correlation. Jones (1981) found a weak positive correlation but could not replicate it. The meta-analysis by Chen et al. (1994) concluded the evidence was inconclusive. Williams and Park (2002) redesigned the methodology entirely and found a strong effect, but their sample was small and geographically limited. Garcia (2010) replicated Williams and Park with a larger sample and found the same effect, but noted significant confounders. The randomized controlled trial by Okafor et al. (2018) — the most rigorous study to date, pre-registered, adequately powered, independently funded — confirms: early musical training produces a measurable, lasting improvement in executive function. The effect size is modest. But it is real.

We could, of course, acknowledge the economic pressures. We could note the partisan incentives. We could observe, sympathetically, that no politician survives by telling voters what they don't want to hear. We could concede that the intelligence was ambiguous, that the timeline was compressed, that hindsight is a luxury of the uninvolved. We could note, further, that the press failed to ask hard questions, that the opposition failed to oppose, that the public failed to demand better. We could qualify, and contextualize, and nuance ourselves into a position where no one is responsible for anything. Having done all of that — having granted every possible excuse, having exhausted every available charity — the fact remains, plain and unadorned: the president lied.
