Definition
A structure that interrupts the present timeline to narrate an earlier event, then returns to the present — using the past to illuminate or complicate the present situation.

Example 1
The senator stands at the podium, face composed, reading a prepared statement about "errors in judgment" and "a failure of oversight." The cameras flash. The questions start. He does not answer them. Twenty-three years earlier, in a dorm room at Georgetown, a nineteen-year-old version of this man wrote a paper on political ethics. The thesis was blunt: "Any public servant who lies to the public has forfeited the right to serve." He got an A. The paper is still in his mother's attic, in a box labeled "Tommy — College." The senator does not remember writing it. But it remembers him.

The new camera weighs 1.2 pounds and shoots 61 megapixels and can autofocus in complete darkness. It costs $6,500. I have been testing it for two weeks. I want to tell you about the images it produces, and I will. But first I need to tell you about a different camera — a Kodak Instamatic 110, plastic, the size of a deck of cards, that my father gave me when I was eight. It took terrible photographs. Blurry, overexposed, off-center. I loved every single one, because each one was proof that I had been somewhere and seen something and chosen to remember it. That is what a camera is for. It is not for sharpness. The $6,500 camera has forgotten this. The Instamatic never knew anything else.

The children's ward had a mural of a giraffe painted by a medical student named Layla. There were coloring books in the waiting room. Mothers sat in plastic chairs and complained about the coffee machine. The surgeon, Dr. Khalil, performed routine appendectomies and went home to his family for dinner. The coffee machine is rubble now. Dr. Khalil is in a refugee camp in Jordan. The giraffe is still on the wall, or what's left of it — half a neck, one brown eye, looking at nothing.
