Definition

The most basic temporal structure: events or ideas presented in the order they occurred, from earliest to latest, allowing the audience to experience the unfolding as it happened.

Examples

Example 1

December 1, 1955: Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. She is arrested. That night, Jo Ann Robinson mimeographs 52,500 flyers calling for a one-day boycott. December 5: the boycott holds. Martin Luther King Jr., twenty-six years old and new to the city, is elected to lead the Montgomery Improvement Association. The one-day boycott becomes a week. A month. A year. December 20, 1956: the Supreme Court ruling takes effect. The buses are integrated. It took 381 days.

Historical narrative — chronological order lets the reader experience the momentum

Example 2

Monday, 6:00 a.m.: the patient presents with a low-grade fever and abdominal pain. The attending orders blood work and an abdominal CT. Tuesday, 2:00 p.m.: CT is read as normal. The fever persists. Pain worsens. The attending suspects gastroenteritis and prescribes fluids. Wednesday, 11:00 p.m.: the patient's blood pressure drops to 80/50. The surgical resident is called. Thursday, 1:15 a.m.: emergency laparotomy reveals a perforated appendix with peritonitis — visible on the original CT, in retrospect, if anyone had looked at the right quadrant. Friday, 9:00 a.m.: the patient is stable. The attending files an incident report. The radiologist re-reads the scan. The appendix was there all along.

Medical narrative — chronology preserves the uncertainty of real-time decision-making

Example 3

The napkin sketch was drawn at a Denny's in March 2014 — two circles connected by a line, labeled "seller" and "buyer" with "us" in the middle. By June, they had incorporated. By September, they had a prototype that crashed every forty minutes. Their first hire was a college dropout who fixed the crashing problem in a weekend. Their first customer was a florist in Pasadena who paid $29 a month and called tech support every day for three weeks. Their first crisis was a server failure on Black Friday that cost them eleven customers, nine of whom came back. Their first pivot — from marketplace to SaaS — happened in a parking lot argument that ended with the co-founder throwing his laptop into a dumpster and then climbing in to retrieve it.

Business narrative — chronological telling preserves the contingency and drama

AI Detection Note

AI handles chronological structure competently but tends to treat all events with equal weight and spacing, missing the variable pacing that makes human historical narrative compelling.
