Syllogistic Progression

Logical ChainPremise-Premise-Conclusion

Movement Pattern

Major PremiseMinor PremiseConclusion(Application)

Definition

A structure that explicitly lays out premises in sequence, each building on the last, to reach an inescapable conclusion through formal logical steps.

Examples

Example 1

Every citizen has the right to free expression. Journalists are citizens. Therefore, journalists have the right to free expression. Any law restricting journalism restricts this right.

Legal reasoning — each premise builds on the last to reach an inescapable conclusion

Example 2

"All data collection creates surveillance risk. Smart home devices collect data continuously. Therefore, smart home devices create continuous surveillance risk." The essay then applies this to policy.

Technology ethics essay — formal syllogism made accessible

Example 3

"The statute requires intent. The prosecution has presented no evidence of intent. Therefore, the statute has not been satisfied, and my client must be acquitted."

Legal defense — the syllogism makes acquittal feel logically inevitable
