Praeteritio Pivot
Movement Pattern
I won't mention X→[Mentions X in detail]→Moves on as if X wasn't mentioned
Definition
A structure that claims to pass over or not mention something, while actually mentioning it in full — using the pretense of omission as the delivery mechanism for the most damaging or important point.
Examples
Example 1
"I won't dwell on my opponent's three bankruptcies, his pending litigation, or his offshore accounts. Instead, let me talk about policy."
Political rhetoric — the denial is the delivery mechanism
Example 2
"I'm not going to mention that our competitor's product was recalled twice last year. What I will say is that our safety record speaks for itself."
Sales rhetoric — praeteritio plants the damaging information while claiming not to
Example 3
"Far be it from me to point out that every member of this committee received donations from the industry they're supposed to regulate. Let's focus on the merits of the bill."
Congressional testimony — the pretense of omission is the most memorable part
AI Detection Note
AI can produce praeteritio but tends to be less subtle about it — the pretense of omission is often transparently mechanical rather than rhetorically deft.
