Napoleon looted Egypt's tombs and inadvertently founded modern archaeology. The pattern repeats across centuries and civilizations: we destroy, we forget, we rediscover, we congratulate ourselves for the rediscovery, and we destroy again. The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history.
