Definition

A structure where sections mirror each other symmetrically around a central pivot — the first section corresponds to the last, the second to the second-to-last, and so on, with the most important material at the center.

Examples

Example 1

Maria stands at the window. She is thinking about her mother. Outside, the garden is overgrown — rosebushes swallowing the fence, mint spreading like a rumor. This was her mother's garden. (The essay moves inward: the garden leads to the house, the house to the kitchen, the kitchen to the argument that happened there on Christmas Eve, 1998 — the center, the wound, the thing that broke them.) And now outward again: the kitchen is empty. The house is quiet. The garden is wild because no one tends it. Maria stands at the window. She is thinking about her mother. But she is not the same Maria who stood here in the first paragraph, because now she knows something she didn't know then, which is that the garden was never about roses. It was about staying.

Example 2

A plague strikes the Greek camp. The soldiers grow restless. Agamemnon and Achilles quarrel over a captive woman. Agamemnon demands Achilles' prize. And here, at the center: Achilles' rage — "μῆνιν" — the first word of the poem and the engine of everything that follows. From this center, the ring expands outward: Thetis appeals to Zeus. The quarrel extends to the gods. The plague lifts. But the rage remains, and twenty-three books later, it is still the subject.

Epic poetry — ring composition places the most important material at the center

Example 3

Aerial shot: the city from above, all geometry and motion, a million lives compressed into a grid. Descend. A neighborhood: laundry on lines, children on stoops, a man selling mangoes from a cart. Closer. A family: the mother at the stove, the father at the table, the daughter doing homework with headphones on. Closer. The daughter. Seventeen. Her name is Luz. She is applying to college. No one in her family has been. This is her story — the center of the ring. (The essay tells it.) And now the camera pulls back: the family, watching her work. The neighborhood, which will celebrate or mourn depending on the outcome. The city, which will not notice either way. Aerial shot. Same grid. Same million lives. But the audience sees one of them now.

Virtually absent from AI text. Ring composition requires deliberate architectural planning that sequential token generation does not naturally produce.
