Epistrophe

Pattern

...X / ...X / ...X — different paths, same landing

Definition

The repetition of a word or phrase at the end of successive clauses — the mirror image of anaphora. Where anaphora drives forward from a repeated starting point, epistrophe pulls each clause toward a repeated landing point. The effect is of convergence: different thoughts arriving at the same conclusion, different arguments pointing to the same truth.

Examples

Example 1

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child.

1 Corinthians 13:11

Each clause ends with "as a child" — the epistrophe pulls every thought back to the same landing point, making childhood feel inescapable.

Example 2

See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.

Each phrase ends with "no evil" — the epistrophe creates a rhythmic refrain that makes the prohibition feel complete and systematic.

Example 3

The people who built this were forgotten. The people who maintained it were forgotten. The people who died for it were forgotten.

Each clause ends with "were forgotten" — the epistrophe makes forgetting feel systematic and deliberate rather than accidental.

AI Detection Note

Epistrophe is rarer than anaphora in AI text because it requires backward planning — the writer must know the ending before constructing the beginning of each clause. AI generates text left to right, making it structurally easier to repeat openings (anaphora) than endings (epistrophe). Consistent epistrophe is a strong marker of deliberate human craft.
