Definition
A slower, contemplative pause that creates space for thought rather than action. The reflective pause invites the listener to dwell on what has been said, to feel its weight, before the speaker moves on. Unlike the accusatory pause (which weaponizes silence) or the setup pause (which creates anticipation), the reflective pause simply asks for stillness.
Examples
Example 1
She had given everything. And somehow, it was still not enough.
The period after "everything" creates a reflective pause — a moment to absorb the completeness of the sacrifice before confronting its insufficiency.
Example 2
He closed the book for the last time. The story was over.
The period creates space for the reader to dwell on the finality before the narrator confirms it. The pause does the emotional work.
Example 3
That was thirty years ago. I still think about it every day.
The reflective pause between the two sentences holds thirty years of distance — the reader crosses that gap in the silence.
