Falling Cadence

Pattern

HIGH stressmediumlowrest — descending energy toward closure

Definition

A cadence that descends in pitch, energy, and emphasis from beginning to end — the vocal equivalent of settling, resolving, or coming to rest. Falling cadence is the natural shape of declarative statements and conclusions. It signals completion, authority, and finality. The heaviest stress falls early in the segment, and the energy gradually dissipates toward the end.

Examples

Example 1

The empire, which had endured for centuries, finally crumbled into dust.

The stress peaks at "endured" and "centuries," then the cadence falls through "finally crumbled" to rest on the soft, low "dust."

Example 2

And so it ended, as these things always do, quietly and without ceremony.

Each successive phrase is lower in energy than the last — the cadence descends through "always do" and "quietly" to expire on "without ceremony."

Example 3

There was nothing more to say.

A single falling cadence from "nothing" down to "say" — the rhythmic descent mirrors the emotional emptying out.

AI Detection Note

AI overuses falling cadence because it is the default shape of grammatically standard declarative sentences. Human writing varies cadence deliberately — using rising cadence to create suspense, blunt cadence for impact, or rolling cadence for flow. AI's cadence monotony (almost always falling) is a reliable detection signal.
