Semantic Bleaching (Mild)
Pattern
Mostly meaningful — one element weakening toward convention
Definition
A phrase where one or more words have begun to lose specificity through frequent use but still retain most of their meaning. The phrase is recognizable as somewhat conventional but not yet a pure formula.
Examples
Example 1
'Play a role in' — the metaphor of theatrical performance is still faintly present, but the phrase is mostly used as a general way to say 'contribute to' or 'affect.' The theatrical meaning is fading.
AI Detection Note
Mildly bleached phrases are extremely common in AI text. 'Play a role', 'shed light on', 'pave the way', 'bridge the gap' — AI defaults to these semi-dead metaphors because they are common in its training data.
