Pathos (Emotional Appeal)

Pattern

Emotion-evoking language + audience identification — persuasion through feeling

Definition

Persuasion through the emotions of the audience — creating feelings that predispose the audience toward the speaker's position. Can target sympathy, fear, outrage, hope, pride, or any other emotion.

Examples

Example 1

Imagine your child walking to school, not knowing if they'll make it home.

Second-person address + vivid scenario + parental fear — engages the reader's emotions through identification

Example 2

She sat in the waiting room for six hours, watching the clock, unable to eat, unable to read, just waiting.

Accumulation of specific, embodied details creates empathic connection through shared experience

Example 3

They weren't numbers on a spreadsheet. They were mothers and fathers and children.

Dehumanization reversed — the abstract ("numbers") is corrected to the concrete and personal ("mothers and fathers")

AI Detection Note

AI pathos attempts often feel generic and manipulative — using emotional language ('heartbreaking', 'inspiring', 'devastating') without the specific, concrete details that genuinely move human readers. AI tells you to feel rather than making you feel.
