Definition
A dependent clause introduced by a relative pronoun (who, which, that) that modifies a noun. Can be restrictive (essential to meaning) or non-restrictive (parenthetical).
Examples
Example 1
The woman who saved his life never knew his name.
Restrictive relative clause — identifies which woman; essential to the meaning
Example 2
Paris, which has been called the City of Light, attracts millions of visitors.
Non-restrictive relative clause — adds information about Paris but doesn't identify it
Example 3
The reason why she left remains a mystery.
Relative clause modifying an abstract noun ("reason") — common in explanatory prose
