Malapropism

Pattern

Wrong word substituted for sound-alike — comic misuse

Definition

The mistaken or humorous use of a word in place of a similar-sounding one, producing a nonsensical or ludicrous effect.

Examples

Example 1

She is as headstrong as an allegory on the banks of the Nile.

Richard Brinsley Sheridan, The Rivals (Mrs. Malaprop)

Mrs. Malaprop — the figure's namesake — means "alligator" but says "allegory"

Example 2

For all intensive purposes, the project is complete.

"Intensive purposes" is a common malapropism for "intents and purposes"

Example 3

He's a wolf in cheap clothing.

"Cheap clothing" replaces "sheep's clothing," accidentally shifting the idiom

AI Detection Note

AI does not produce intentional malapropism. LLMs select words for semantic correctness, making deliberate comic misuse outside their natural behavior. Any malapropisms in AI text are genuine errors.
