Meiosis
Pattern
Minimizing language for something significant
Definition
Deliberate understatement that diminishes or belittles the importance of something.
Examples
Example 1
'Tis but a scratch.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Black Knight dismisses the loss of his arm as a minor wound, a comic masterpiece of understatement
Example 2
The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.
Attributed to Mark Twain
Twain diminishes what would be the ultimate event — his own death — to a mere inaccuracy in reporting
Example 3
We had a little bit of a dust-up in the Pacific.
Referring to a major military conflict as a "dust-up" deliberately minimizes its scale
AI Detection Note
Rare in AI text. LLMs tend to match the scale of their language to the scale of the subject rather than deliberately understating. Genuine meiosis requires tonal control that AI struggles with.
