Dysphemism

Pattern

Harsh term replaces neutral one — roughened reference

Definition

Deliberate use of a harsh, blunt, or offensive expression in place of a milder or more neutral one. The opposite of euphemism.

Examples

Example 1

He didn't pass away; he croaked.

Replaces a gentle euphemism with a blunt, harsh alternative to strip away sentimentality

Example 2

The politician dismissed the proposal as "garbage" unworthy of serious debate.

Common in political discourse

Using a deliberately crude term to express contempt and lower the status of an idea

Example 3

Why would I read that rag? It hasn't printed real journalism in years.

Calling a newspaper a "rag" deliberately degrades it

AI Detection Note

Rare in AI text. LLMs are trained toward politeness and neutrality, strongly preferring euphemism over dysphemism. Deliberate harshness or bluntness of expression is a human authorship signal.
