Irony
Pattern
Said meaning ≠ intended meaning — opposite signaling
Definition
Expression in which the intended meaning is the opposite of the literal meaning of the words, often to expose a discrepancy.
Examples
Example 1
The fire station burned down while the firefighters were out on a call.
Situational irony — the very place meant to fight fires is destroyed by one
Example 2
What a pleasant surprise to find a parking ticket on my windshield on Christmas morning.
Verbal irony where "pleasant surprise" clearly means the opposite
Example 3
England and America are two countries separated by the same language.
Attributed to George Bernard Shaw
The irony lies in a shared language being reframed as a source of division rather than unity
AI Detection Note
AI struggles with genuine irony because it requires the reader to understand that the intended meaning is the opposite of the stated meaning. LLMs tend toward sincerity and literal expression, making sustained ironic voice rare.
