Consonance
Pattern
xCx xCx — repeated consonant sounds (not initial)
Definition
Repetition of consonant sounds, typically at the end or middle of words, within close proximity.
Examples
Example 1
He struck a streak of bad luck.
The "k" sound recurs in "struck," "streak," and "luck," binding the words with a percussive thread
Example 2
And all the air a solemn stillness holds.
Thomas Gray, "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard"
The repeated "l" and "s" consonants create a hushed, lingering quality that mirrors the stillness described
Example 3
Pitter-patter, pitter-patter — the little feet of the toddler rattle across the kitchen floor.
The recurring "t" and "r" sounds across multiple words mimic the rapid percussion of small footsteps
AI Detection Note
Very rare as a deliberate device in AI text. Like assonance, consonance requires phonetic awareness that LLMs lack — any consonance in AI output is coincidental.
