Ellipsis
Pattern
A_B, _B — omitted but understood element
Definition
Deliberate omission of a word or words that are implied by context, creating a compact expression.
Examples
Example 1
The fewer, the better.
The omitted noun ("people," "options") is understood from context, creating a punchier statement
Example 2
Some people prefer coffee; others, tea.
The verb "prefer" is omitted in the second clause but clearly implied by parallelism
Example 3
And he to England shall along with you.
Shakespeare, Hamlet
The verb "go" is omitted before "along," a common Shakespearean compression
AI Detection Note
AI tends toward explicit, complete sentences rather than elliptical constructions. LLMs are biased toward filling in all grammatical slots, making deliberate ellipsis uncommon in AI output.
